Where do you put these big wood things? Well, some folks put ’em in their yards, like them fancy garden statues. Guess it shows off their family or somethin’. Some folks, they put ’em inside, but I don’t see how. Them things are tall, takes up the whole darn room practically. Some folks use them for art, but I can’t see how, looks kinda creepy to me like them things they make for Halloween, you know?
I saw some fella makin’ these things once. Used a chainsaw, made a heck of a mess. But he could make anything outta wood, bears, birds, even people, though they looked kinda stiff. Said he could make any kinda pole you wanted, big or small. But I reckon it takes a while, gotta be patient with wood. Can’t just rush these things.
You can find these poles all over the place if you look. Up north, where them Injuns come from, they got lots of ’em. Museums too, they like to keep old things, shows how folks used to live. But these new custom ones, they ain’t old, but they’re made the same way, mostly. Hand-carved, that’s the important part. Ain’t no machine can do that, not yet anyway. Gotta be made with love and care.
So, why get a custom totem pole? Well, I reckon it’s for folks who want somethin’ special, somethin’ that tells their story. Or maybe they just like the way they look, all them animals and faces starin’ back at ya. Me? I’d rather have a good ol’ rocking chair, more comfortable, but to each their own, I always say.
Now, if you’re thinkin’ ’bout gettin’ one of these poles, be prepared to shell out some cash. And make sure you find someone who knows what they’re doin’, you don’t want no sloppy work, specially when you payin’ good money. Get it done right, get it made to last, just like them Injuns did way back when. That’s the way to do it, if you ask me.
And one last thing, remember them poles ain’t just wood. They got stories in ’em, history in ’em. Respect that, and you’ll have somethin’ special, somethin’ that’ll last longer than you will, probably. That’s the real beauty of it, I reckon.
